Vagus nerve cooling for anxiety

Hold Cryo-1 against the side of your neck. Most people report a calming effect within 2 to 4 minutes, with no medication.

“I get panic attacks. When I feel it coming on, I cool my vagus nerve on my neck, and it slows my heart rate back down. I did not think it would help, but it does.”

Why it works

Cooling sends your nervous system a physical signal.

The problem

Anxiety starts in the body

For many people anxiety doesn't start with a thought. Your heart races, your breathing tightens, and a wave of fear builds. The harder you try to think your way out, the more drained you feel.

The physiology

Fight-or-flight takes over

  • Heart rate increases
  • Breathing becomes shallow
  • A sense of urgency or danger takes over
What cooling does

Two ways to settle your body

Neck cooling helps signal your body to leave fight-or-flight and slow the heart rate. Palm cooling reduces the heat buildup that often comes with anxiety. This isn't distraction — it's a physical signal.

  • Neck cooling for the stress response
  • Palm cooling for heat and flushing
  • Quiet, handheld and discreet

“Cooling my palms seems to interrupt awful wave before it becomes a full panic. I still use breathing exercises too.”

PANIC RESPONSE

R Rina N.
“Something as simple as my daily schedule getting messed up used to trigger instant heart racing. Now I reach for cryo-1 and it helps a lot.”

HEAT-TRIGGERED ANXIETY

G Gray M.
“I got overstimulated and hot in the crowd. Sitting in the quiet car with cold palms helped my breathing slow before the ride home.”

What the research shows

Targeted cooling has been studied for its effect on vagal pathways and heart rate. Here is what the research found.

Illustration of blood vessels used for cooling
Jungmann et al., 2018

Neck cooling lowers heart rate

A randomized trial with 61 healthy participants applied cold to the lateral neck in 16-second intervals. It significantly raised heart rate variability and lowered heart rate compared to baseline.

A quiet living room setting
Kohn et al., 2020

Extended neck cooling slows the heart

In 11 adults, 90 minutes of localized neck cooling dropped neck skin temperature about 9°C and slowed heart rate significantly during the cooling period.

Choi, Roh & Cho, 2023

Cooling helps the body recover from stress

In adolescent cyclists, neck cooling reduced perceived heat, lowered ear temperature, decreased heart rate during recovery and reduced stress markers in the blood.
